Better late than never here is the birthday party report . . . from two weeks ago! We didn't have a big birthday party for baby S. We did so much for the baptism that we decided to play the first birthday low key. After all, it felt like it was more our milestone than his. We'd been through so much this first year, both good and bad. Every new parent knows what I mean. We really merited our bottle of champagne! And well, baby S could have cared less. He appreciated all the hoopla but to him it was just another day.
We decorated the house and blew up about 25 balloons which we scattered everywhere. I baked some bread and a little banana muffin for his cake. He adores banana bread so he was delighted to have a whole muffin all to himself. We invited our eighty-five year old neighbors over to help us in the celebration. They 're like grandparents to baby S. Lison was there when I first stepped out of the car with baby S in my arms. She promptly declared him "magnifique," and then said to me "bien fait ma grande," her eyes all teary. They always stop by at least once a week to oogle over him so it was important to us that they were at least there. Otherwise we had no real family nearby that we could invite and we haven't lived here long enough to get to know anyone. I suppose that will change once baby S starts preschool.
He had lots of little packages to open thanks to my sister Jane. She's always very good about being thoughtful with presents and birthdays. She sent him so much that we even felt guilty as his parents for not getting him more. We got him a small circus tent for his bedroom to compliment his Fisher Price house that his grandparents bought him last Christmas. Putting the tent together was no fun. The tent poles were too big for some strange reason and we couldn't figure out why. We really struggled putting it together. We were cursing the instructions which looked easy enough, "click, clack, snap," but weren't at all! Finally we just had to laugh at the lopsided results. It has since been improved but not much.
Here we are testing life under the big tent.

Oooh lucky baby S you've made me drool at the thought of a banana muffin! Sounds like the day was perfect!
Can you tell me where you got the circus tent you have over the Fisher Price house in Baby S's bedroom? I am looking all over for it! It is too cute.
Heather I got that tent here in France for about 10 euros (ie. it's kinda crappy...might want to splurge for a bit more) I just liked it because it matches his room with all the bright colors. I got it at a store called CASA which is very similar to the American "Pier Import" so maybe you can check there.
