Party planning

I'm planning a second birthday party for Little S with some teeny tiny guests and I'm calling for backup. Got any ideas people out there? A lot of you are moms and some of you are pretty creative so I know you can help me. I want him to have a good time and hey I want to impress the Frenchies with an actual American Birthday Party!

There won't be many guests. I think we'll be about eight maybe ten grownups and three or four kids all under two. I need ideas for decorations, a few silly toddler games and food that won't scream REDNECK AMERICAN NEIGHBOR LADY, but rather gently suggest it. Are you with me here?

American blog friends please understand that I am living in the equivalent of 1975 Des Moines, Iowa so of course there is no Walmart here to "just run out to" and scrap-booking scissors are like strange sci-fi objects from the future. Work with me on this. There will be no DayGlo cupcake sprinkles or Crayola party favor bags with disposable digital cameras inside...sadly. Think back to the heyday of televisions with faux wood accents and you'll be right on my page.

Geez, I'm drawing a blank. Are two-year olds too young for Pin the Tail on the Donkey?

i'd suggest cupcakes in the place of a big birthday cake--that way everyone can have fun tearing them up. you can get some neat cake decorations at the grocery store, usually. games? hmm... how's the weather? warm enough for a kidde pool? Two is a difficult age because while they want to play around other kids, they rarely want to play WITH other kids. Maybe cover a table with white paper and give them all crayons? Could make a good party favor, too. Chicken nuggets are usually a hit and they come in cool shapes now, too... Hey, maybe strap a few blue IKEA!!! bags to a clothes line and...uh, nevermind. Good luck to ya!

This is a great site for ideas. We've been using it for years! http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com/html/party_ideas.html

That's the hard part. I mean what can they do at this age but run around and scream a lot. I guess they're a little young yet for a real party.

That's a great website Kathy. I've been there before. A lot of it centers around stuff you can buy in the States at "your local Walmart" which is just frustrating because I was saying to myself over and over "nope can't buy that ...no, no, no can't rent out the firehouse for the afternoon,..." I did get some good ideas though and I think I can do some improvising.

Lots of balloons and maybe a big bucket of water with a little fishing pole game or peche au canards kind of game.

I can't help much in the toddler game idea department. But expect some of the parents to want to hang around after the party -- ending times are very unofficial. So be ready with tea or apéritif, whatever the time calls for.

Have fun (she says as if it were possible...)!
