We draw and paint every day in this house and Little S always likes it when I throw out a theme to him, or he will draw something he´s excited about himself like trains or owls or like a few weeks ago it was nothing but airplanes. To encourage him I will pull up videos on You Tube and show him some details about the thing or what the animal is like and we will talk about where it lives and how it eats. He loves this!
I often draw next to him and when he sees me drawing it motivates him to draw and try new techniques. I am careful not to ever instruct him in a teachery way but he always looks over at my drawing and ask lots of questions. I never tell him how to draw I just help him with techniques sometimes when I´m sure he will benefit from it, like I taught him how to make fluid paint strokes because before he was scribbling with the brushes and he needed some help (and so did our poor brushes).
Anyway back to the theme. Somehow Little S got interested in husky dogs a few days ago. I think it was because of the movie "8 Below" which he loves--he loves any winter themed movies or books and he kind of wants a dog. So we are doing lots of stuff about husky sled dogs right now, even though you know it´s almost summer, and it´s strange to be thinking about sled dogs and frozen landscapes (...or not), so I thought it would be fun if some others joined us in our drawing adventures. If you´d like to join us this week in drawing or painting a husky dog image it would be interesting and fun and sort of like a little art club. A crude drawing, elaborate painting, mini paper maché, collage, knitted, sewn, embroideried or whatever. We are using a lot of different mediums ourselves.
In a week, next Friday I´ll do a post showing off what we came up with and if you and/or your kids did something in the theme come over and share your link with me. If you don´t have a blog you can post on Flickr or another photo sharing site. It´s just a fun way to keep the kids motivated to draw or to motivate yourself to draw & create. And you will learn something by researching the themes. Even if you or your kids can't draw that's fine. In fact that´s better than fine. We are definitely amateurs here. I´m barely past balloon bodies on stick legs, so you know, we're just in it for the fun and it´s not something you need to spend hours on.
So rendez-vous in one week and please go watch this video and you will see why we like these dogs so much. They're full of so much personality.
