Isn't decorating fun. I love decorating a house! I'm so addicted to decorating shows that when I go home to visit my mother has taken to putting a tv in the back bedroom for me so I won't camp out on her kitchen tv (there's certainly no shortage of tvs in my parent's house!).We're at the part where we're choosing the colors for the walls of our new place and I have high hopes of having a color palette for the entire house. I think a color palette is really important. I learned this from visiting the mega houses my dad oversees building and seeing over the years what a decorator and their swatches can do for a place. The houses just flow so well. As a result I've been obsessing a bit about decorating blogs lately. I've been rethinking furniture and what will work in what spaces and I've been dejunking.

I love the Romantic (Baroque) style. It's so rich and beautiful in any house but particularly an old one. It's a pretty amazing effect when done over an entire house like the ones in those wonderful blog links. I know I would feel very comfortable in a house like this and I'd love searching for the pieces in trocs and brocantes and painting the furniture. I also have a lot of dark oak provencal furniture left in the house that would look amazing painted and provencal furniture is a dime a dozen in this part of the world so it would be easy and cheap to find new pieces. The problem for me is that I have a lot of pieces (the buffet!) that I just can't paint and what would I do with them? You can't really mix dark and light pieces in this kind of decor. For now I think I will definitely do this style in my bedroom and in Charlotte's bedroom and then see if the fever infects me into doing the rest of the house. I'm thinking it probably will.
I change my mind a lot about decorating and colors. I started off with a palette of earthy colors--dark browns, dark pumpkin and beige and a sort of toned out gray palette for some rooms that mixed surprisingly well with those autumn tones. I'm not so sure about this color scheme anymore though. I am really smitten by that romantic style, and particularly its light grays and blues. I wonder if I might just end up doing that style in the entire house and maybe just throw a blanket over my buffet or something.
What is your favorite decorating style? Where do you find your furniture and accessories?
By the way Notes from a Cottage Industry is another favorite decorating blog in the same style, and her blog has millions of great links in the sidebar.

i also love decorating, i find myself in the past year or so drawn to lots of design, both furniture and more fabric.
my style tends much towards mid century modern/danish modern. my last big purchase (and in a way first) was an authentic tulip table for our living/dining room. In a week or two I should get the green tolix chairs that will go around it.
My next project is to recreate this look with a green wallpaper

(on hold until we hear back from a few of my husbands job interviews).
Sara I love your style. You aren't afraid of color and I like that in anyone!
I need to get a password for your blog (if it's okay). I did see your picture on Flickr the other day but didn't get a chance to comment.
I am a terrible decorator. I focus on the practical an affordable, don't enjoy furniture shopping, don't enjoy browsing and can never picture how how things are going to look when I get them home or put them with other things we have.
My mother loves color and knows how to use it. I wish some of her flair had rubbed off on me.
I am enjoying watching you bring your new house back to life though. Maybe this time it will rub off on me.
Wow, I love the look of the room you have here.
I have so many personalities (A little "All About Eve") so my house sort of takes the steps to entertain each and not hinder any. Lately I have been a bit neater in my home and finding a strong purge coming on so I have no idea where that will be headed.
For now, I play with what I have since money is very tight and there are rooms that are workable, but I eventually want to rehash with tearing down walls and such.
I try to find the most beautiful aspects of my home and accentuate them. I have light to play with, red oak floors, a gunmetal-hued ironwork bedframe and bright yellow 1960s chairs.
It's a mish mash of styles which pretty much suits me since I can't be tied down to one style before I get bored with it.
I do, however, appreciate those who do whether it be soft and romantic like yours, wild and chic and so fab like Guy's or perfectly in place and pristine like Misty's.
Wow, now that I reflect on this maybe I should try to figure out how my hovel expresses my personality. That would be fun. For now let's just call it wild, with a touch of class.
Oh and Charlotte's picture is so adorable.
so glad you are back. I cannot wait to see what you do with the place.
It has so much potential. What a great house.
Oh, and to comment on yesterday's post...your little one is soooo adorable. She looks like a little cherub...and the hair...so sweet.
My little one turns 2 in December.
I am currently in the middle of redecorating our apartment- living room, dining room, and all three bedrooms! My husband is pushing me to just make decisions and starting buying things so that the work can be done by Christmas time. I don't think I've ever had this much to do in such a short time and it is getting overwhelming. I think I prefer doing the decorating over time, at the much slower pace that a house renovation takes place, because it leaves you the time to really consider your choices. I wanted to mention one our great finds- have you ever used Farrow and Ball paint? It has a beautiful historic color range of colors that are all a bit "aged" so that they fit perfectly into old houses. They are pricey but they finish is amazing (particularly on older plaster) and they are incredibly durable. We used them in every room in our house in the matte finish.
thanks :)
its fun to read about your remodeling adventures.
