We got our chimneys cleaned & had our first fire in the new house. It was so exciting to finally be able to have a fireplace again I felt like dancing (I think Little S actually DID dance). It's been a long time and I can't tell you how envious I am whenever we return to our old house to have a coffee & I see the renter has stoked up the fireplace and the whole house is heated. I miss that thing! The system distributes the warm air from the foyer through the entire house with a blower. We're putting another system like that in this house eventually and I'm really excited about it. It's a ways off though but I'll blog about it soon.
This fireplace has an open foyer so unfortunately it doesn't heat much beyond three feet in front of it. It's mostly for ambiance which is fine by us. At least we have something to sit next to on cold winter nights. I was really feeling grumpy because there are two fireplaces in the house and Seb is so worried about the house catching on fire (imagine that) that he wouldn't crank them up until they were inspected and professionally cleaned. It turns out there was no soot in them at all, just a dustpan full and they are in fine condition.
I talk in my Flickr photo about painting the fireplace and you can click over there to read about it. I have so many projects lately I can't see straight!

I love sitting by a nice warm fire. It looks like you had lots of fun.
You were right when you said a buche would have done the trick! (but apparently for insurance purposes you need to have a professional clean it once a year & keep the facture.)
I wish our fireplace would heat the rest of the house too. My sister-in-law has a system like that and it is wonderful. It gives off such a warm, cozy heat.
