Field trips

Since the weather got warmer we've started walking home from S's school each week two times a week. We're about two miles from the school and most of it's uphill so it's a challenge to push a stroller, but two times a week is okay and a refreshing change from the stress of trying to find parking and weaving through the after school chaos. Instead we just head uphill into the forest.

Little S loves it so much it takes us well over an hour to get home. I think the walk will gradually turn into a field trip because he stops and explores nearly every nook and cranny anyway, so I was thinking maybe we should take more supplies along--pencils and pens. I want to make some field bags for this and Little S just got a new sketchbook and a pen so I guess he'soverdue for the field bag project. I think it will probably take us even longer to get home as time goes on, but it should be fun as we stop for a sketch session here and there.

And I have an idea for all these empty jars that were rotting down in the basement. I love these nature collections on the Heywood's Meadow blog. I think this is the perfect idea for the treasures we find along the way.

You need to post your sketches. Take the leap!

FUN! We used to walk home and I loved it. Now it's too far, and we'd have to cross town anyway.

Jc - Hmm, I think this is a case of you show me yours, I'll show you mine. Have you ever posted a page from your sketchbook?

Jennifer - When we tell people we walk home sometimes they say "really!?" like it's really far or something. It is pretty far but doable from time to time. What I like is that it gives Little S a sense of where he lives and where he goes to school and he doesn't get that in the car. Maybe you could drive halfway then walk to get him from town. At least he'd get to leave school on foot which I think is good for them sometimes.
