Pages

In the great spirit of drawing and encouraging other people to share their sketches I thought one day I'd put up some pages from my journal. And then Jennifer, of NPLI took me up on a dare so here I am. I'm baring my amateur creative buns for all the internet (click to make bigger).

I draw in bed mostly drawing my hands, pictures from the decoration magazines by my bed, and right now I'm having fun drawing people and things from Diego Rivera's paintings because he's my big guru fave lately. I love words and fonts, always have, and sometimes I'll spend hours copying silly words. I also love children's books and when I'm reading to my kids I'll get inspired to draw the animals from their books. Sometimes I'll draw in the back yard. I'm trying to do more real life drawing, which was the original goal, to get out and draw maybe with friends or the kids. It's almost impossible to get a stray moment to do it with young-uns running around so I don't get to do it much but I prefer those sketches because they feel less stiff.

I use various Pilot felt tip pens from the grocery store and a one euro sketch book that I got at Gifi (the French K-Mart). I'm experimenting with different pens trying to get the right groove. In the past few weeks I've been using a new erasable Pilot pen which I have mixed feelings about.

This is my third month of keeping this sketch book and I'm really motivated to keep it going. It's so much fun to get lost in a sketch.

If you sketch or journal I'm daring you to share a few pages too. Come out of the closet and into the fresh air. Be brave.

I used to keep a gorgeous journal. But now I blog. I think when my kids are older I might go back to the journal. Unfortunately with work, two little kids, and other interests, there is not enough time to keep up with both.

Your sketches are lovely! Whenever you write about them, I picture you in your French bed, a decorating magazine by your side, your sketchbook up against the tent of your legs and the open page lit by a little French bedside lamp.

Nice! Thanks for sharing your drawings, Chris. I keep several sketchbooks but at the same time I am also very disorganized about it and lose one, pick up another, shuffling them around. Then I rip our pages or write lists or recipes in them, which makes it even worse. Keep it up! I love your animal drawings.

Jennifer - I'd love to see some of it! At least a cover and a page, come on.

Lucy - I know you must have posted some pages in the past, right?

Hoorah!

Your sketches are LOVELY! Your animals are adorable and I really like your trees. I have a thing for trees.

And HANDS! So difficult to do. One of the hardest parts of the body. I found this online book by Andrew Loomis re: the head and hands that I love to death. You can tell so much about a person by their hands.

Awesome stuff my dear. Just brilliant.

Now you've got me hankering for a life drawing class. It's been so long...

savez-vous que les mains sont tres difficiles a reproduire, dans tous les dessins et peintures? regardez tous les tableaux des musees et vous verrez qu'en depit du talent de beaucoup de peintres, certaines mains sont moins reussies que le reste du personnage.
Bravo!

Frida is my longtime fave, but Diego is a close second. Were you ever able to visit their houses in DF? I spent a lot of time in the city while in Mexico, in many of their old haunts, and I found that very inspiring...

Jennifer - Thanks for the encouragement. I'd love to take that type of class too. It's always fun drawing real people isn't it.

yveline - oui je cherche toujours les mains dans les pentures aussi, j'aime voir comment ils ont fait.

Alyssa - Ohhh, lucky you. No i didn't get a chance to go and I really wanted to so it was frustrating to leave without going :( For years before I had always planned to make the trip with the mother of a friend, the one who introduced me to their art in the first place.
