Tearing out floors

Dust allergies? Lots of nose blowing around here. We all sound like elephants.

Our old floors are being torn out this week down to the trusses (is that a word...I think it's what they are...floor joists? trusses?). Anyway since the original floor was laid on sand and dirt we had to remove the tiles and shovel out the old floors in preparation for the concrete. I didn't get to save my tomettes but the house will definitely smell better without all that dirt.

Here's some photos of what it looks like and what it will look like for the next few weeks while we finish the electricity and plumbing. The old kitchen (first photo), the hallway (second) and living room (third) are in shambles. If it looks like chaos it's because it is. We're living between the downstairs basement kitchen and the upstairs bedrooms and in between we have to walk through the mess. The kids don't mind but I'm having a hard time keeping them clean because they love tearing though the open spaces. We're going to really appreciate those clean floors when they're finished. Sanity where are you?

For this job (minus the electricty) we've hired pros but the rest will be us. We've laid off our Portuguese workers who were to do all the drywall and we've taken the job back. This is good and bad news but mostly it's good.

You're doing the drywall yourselves? Wow. That is so much work! I am impressed.

I sense there is a story behind the Portuguese leaving. Was it how messy they were?

Mounting drywall is pretty easy except for the finish work. The rest of the rooms are all square so we have it easy! We'll hire someone to tape it and mud it.

The P's kept changing the details of our devis and when we added in the cost for us to rent a place in the region Parisien for three weeks while they take over *ahem* our house we were way over budget. We may ask them to come for a week and do a little work but I'd rather we didn't.
