These are progress pictures of S's room. Excuse our mess but it's a work zone!
Before there was a drop ceiling in the bedroom (full of mouse poop!) and some crazy green bamboo motif wallpaper. Now, there's a 12ft ceiling and this great feeling of open space. I can't wait to decorate it but those ceilings won't be fun to paint. The play area is on the right (see photo below).
His play area, --looks very dismal for now but should be nice when it's finished. This was our idea to use the extra attic space nixed by nearly everyone who saw our plans. They thought it would look odd. It was either make one huge bedroom and one small one or give each kid a little play area in each room. I like this idea because later this can be an office/study area and I think it works perfectly as a private little niche. It just looked odd on paper when we first drew the plans.
On my Flickr pages there's a description of the giant window in S's room and the little problem we have with it and the window guys. We can't do much finishing on that wall until we get the new window so S's room unfortunately won't be completely done until after Christmas.

"either sanding the beams or whitewashing them"
I've just painted my kitchen beams white, it was so gloomy before and now it really really isn't so if light is an issue my preference is for painting. although given that it took me seven whole days to do the whole thing I don't think it is that much less labour intensive than sanding. Mind you I kept falling of the painting platform and damaging myself so that might account for some of the snail like progress LOL.
No light isn't an issue so much. I like them both ways because wood is so earthy but I'm leaning towards white for the blendability aspect--Seb is okay with whitewashing them (not painting them) but he prefers natural wood. I have so many inspiration photos it's sickening! By the way you still have to sand them before painting them, or at least we do on ours because they're really dirty (mouse poop colored!) so the work is still there *big sigh*
