I realized when I sat down to the computer tonight that I accidentally posted the draft I was working on about my car getting found. I had a really hard time writing about it, there's just so many details and so much emotion that it was a post in progress and I guess I hit send at one point and it ended up "out there" before I was done. Sorry if you left a comment. I did see the comments in my mailbox so thank you.
And now I can't find the post in my drafts so I don't know where it is. A lot of odd things like this are happening lately. I don't know what's up with my life these days. Honestly I'm starting to wonder. Anyway for a recap if you didn't get my post in your reader, --my car was found by the police and it ended up it was just next to the window installer's stock warehouse in a store parking lot, 150 meters away. People in the store watched in the parking lot as the guys set fire to the car in broad daylight and then ran off. They all gave some kind of vague description but the interesting point was that they all said that guys were wearing blue uniforms and that's pretty much what these window guys wear so it was odd. Another person said they saw them come from the warehouse parking lot pulling my car. They were seen by lots of people tugging my (no doubt) out of gas car along, chug, chug, chug.
The window guys have been giving us problems since forever and I haven't blogged about it because it wasn't something we wanted to dwell on. To be as brief as possible they cashed a check held in escrow, a biggie! and then they never, ever, ever ordered our windows. Three months later we still kept getting the phone tag runaround and we couldn't start any other work until the windows were in so out of desperation Seb cornered the commercial rep at the sales office one afternoon and the guy said "look I'm quitting tomorrow-- these guys are nuts and you'll never get your windows or your deposit money unless you sue them. They haven't paid me in weeks!" then he gave him the address of the warehouse where he said his boss was living because of personal problems, go figure. Sure enough Seb found the guy half asleep in his underwear in the warehouse and asked when we could get our windows. The guy blamed all the delays on the corporate headquarters so Seb, ever the detective called the hq in Alsace and found out that they had no idea who we were and our windows were never ordered. The hq ordered our windows but we still had to deal with our local sales branch.
So anyway when the window installers came they had HUGE attitudes and I've been dealing with them for weeks now. They also installed the wrong window upstairs, completely nuts and a whole other problem that I blogged a little about on my Flickr page. And so two weeks ago when I innocently asked Rasputin* the head installer about a few problems with the shutters he suddenly just blew up at me and I was completely shocked. It was like he had all this pent up rage and he was there just inches from my face screaming. He was saying things like "people like you with your old houses think you can have new windows that work correctly? Oh come on lady!" and I couldn't get a word in because he was just an explosion of anger. And I said to myself "oh wow he's probably the boss's brother or something."
I was pretty sure from the start that it was them for a few obvious reasons. My spare keys, or OUR spare keys were by the door he was working on that day he blew up at me. Seb is missing his spare keys too now. They knew my school pickup hours all too well because I'd always say it before I'd run out because I'm polite like that and I was worried they might need something while I ran out,--I'm such a naieve country hick. I see that now. And they knew I'd go in the basement for snack time and they knew the angle of the windows and what you could and couldn't see, because from the outside it looks like the people inside can see well but Rasputin installed those windows so he knew what parts of the driveway you can't see.
And he kicked my cat one day. I saw him do it. People who kick cats are generally criminal minded. So there.
The police aren't all that interested in our story and they said if there's another incident they'll look into it, *yawn*. Meanwhile my car is torched and impounded and they stole my kids Christmas gifts and set fire to my son's car seat. They likely have the keys to our house too because they installed our doors. They also very likely have Seb's car keys too, and get this they have to come back and work in our house at least three more times. I'm a little freaked out.
I can't figure out why we keep having such bad luck lately. It's like we have a black cloud following us.
*(he looks exactly like Rasputin, same beard and everything, and he has a sort of Polish-Russian name)

I think it might be worth it to change the locks on your doors... I would be too worried about them coming while you were on vacation and cleaning you out. What an awful situation. I am so sorry.
OMG- I would have changed the locks yesterday! When you think how much it will cost to replace everything in your house (and since they can get all your bank details by riffling through your desk, also take all your cash) the price of locks seems pretty insignificant. I would also go and do a statement with the police re: the verbal abuse and the keys going missing so that you have everything officially recorded.
OMG! I feel weird jumping in like this, because I haven't commented here in a long time, but I enjoy your art projects and storiews, but anyway, I am in the middle of reading The Gift of Fear and I definitely reccomend it. It is all about listening to your instincts and looking for cues to predict people's behavior.
As others said, change your locks, and don't rationalize away what your instincts are telling you about these guys.
So, be safe and Merry Christmas!
Like I said on the other post, change your locks. Really.
I read but rarely comment but I've got to today. Like Lauren, I recently read The Gift of Fear and it was eye-opening.
Your post scared the pants off of me. You cannot let these people in your house again, no matter what the cost or inconvenience. Change the locks immediately and have Seb's car re-keyed too.
Anyone who is unstable and enraged enough to scream in your face, kick your cat, steal your car and set FIRE to it in broad daylight, with witnesses, is incredibly dangerous.
They have gotten away with this so far. What is to stop them from waiting until you are away and letting themselves in to damage, steal, or set fire to anything they want inside your home?
Change the locks, change the locks, change the locks, and never let them in again. Please.
Hi, I must agree with the above comments - these guys are dangerous. Change all locks and don't let them near your property, never mind your home ever again.
Also security cameras are very reasonable now and actually even the fake ones that light up but don't film still provide a measure of deterrence.
I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas.
What a horrible story! I'm so sorry that you're having to go through all of this. I have to agree with everyone else that you need to change the locks and I wouldn't let them in my house again, either. I know that hq said that you have to deal with the local sales office, but maybe they have someone else that they can recommend in this instance. They may think you're a little nutty, of course, since the police didn't seem too interested, but you shouldn't have to worry about the safety of your family (and your cat!) to have those windows installed.
Wow, I hope this gets better and that you have a lovely Christmas.
Yikes! Please change your locks. In your place I would also install some high-quality surveillance cameras, one pointed at the entrance to your home, the other set to your husband's car.
Definitely change the house locks and when they come to install, shadow them like a crazy woman. my car has been stolen (and found, praise God!) twice and my house was robbed once and the other night someone tried to rob me and one thing i'm learning. i am in control of my house. Not of circumstances that happen because of life or just 'stuff' but if someone comes into my house to do wrong, i will go crazy on them.
So go crazy. It's your house. You are not the victim of them - THEY are working for you - in France or anywhere else. If they are in the Living Room....you can be there too..phone in hand, etc. And if anyone yells at you again like that, girl, go postal on their butt.
i truly hope all works out for the best - stay alert...be careful and don't be afraid to let them know YOU are the Mistress of the house.
Did you tell the HQ people about the guy going ballistic on you? I'd think that's grounds for not dealing with the local branch. Any way to get a refund and go somewhere else?
OMG I just read about this. SOOOO sorry about your car and about having to deal with those people! I'm guessing that by now Seb and you have probably changed the locks in your house (PLEASE DO!) and hopefully spoken to the HQ about all the incidents you've been having with the local branch (wrong window installation, bad attitude, wrongful check deposit)... I'm sure you could probably gain some of your money back, even if that wont take away all the rest.
My best wishes for you and your loving famille in 2010!!!
Fned.
I am here way too late, I'm sure, but I do hope that you guys changed your locks.
I think I would have also done a "main courante" (your feeling threatened) as well as sending the "main courante" to the insurance company to be safe with the HQ in copy.
Oof. Seriously scary.
And that's bogus about the old houses and new windows. We had new ones installed in our old house and every time we've had a "reglage" that needs doing because the house settles a bit, our window company has been stellar.
