Painting is so relaxing and mediatative and it's the perfect activity for anyone at the crossroads of anything in their life. But then standing back you look at the wall and say to yourself "I love this room that color is perfect!" knowing full well you're probably painting it for someone else. There in a nutshell was my weekend, --lots of "ahhh!" "oohhhh".... "agh!"The decision isn't made just yet and there is always the posibility that other things will come up. Seb is still job hunting as he has been for the last six months but pickings are slim and there isn't much out there. It's not that I'm against going, it's just the international move groan issue. It's paperwork, sad goodbyes, language, internet issues, new schools, moving companies, boxes and all that scratched furniture. And it's all the lost time. It's an entire summer of preparing and then six month of settling. Afterwards it's exciting though I have to admit.
So we're waiting but meanwhile sort of preparing for the move just in case. It takes about two months for contract negotiations so that buys us time to think things over. Meanwhile I'm not buying another car just yet and bummming rides right and left which is awful, and as soon as summer comes Seb has to give back his company car so we'll both be carless which will be funny. Kind of like life has decided things for us. In the not buying a car issue people around us have figured out that our faux checkout visit was for real and so now everyone around us knows we might be leaving. I only said "psst" to one person in the village, the person who usually takes S to school in the mornings, and within two days I had the wife of our carpenter asking me what we'd decided. Within another week people started asking us about renting the house. Welcome to small town life! I have since told everyone that we've decided no because it was annoying to have people surveying our property for potential renters. Anyway we already talked to a real estate agent who told us we'd rent the house easily and for a lot more money than we even thought so no more renting to people we know--huge mistake we won't make again!
Of course like I said we have to finish the house.
The question is would you finish the house the way you had it in your head or would you leave it all white and generic? I was really disappointed with all this news because I wanted to finish the damn house and paint it. In France paint is three times the price it is in the US and England. I wanted to paint and finish the kitchen like I have it in my plans (Ikea kitchen by the way so not super expensive) but then I know that somone who rents can just repaint or *gasp* wallpaper *shudder* right over my pretty mid-century red-orange wall. Oh well, I dove in and painted it anyway.
I keep having flashbacks to when my mil moved in to their house a few years ago and said they hated the ugly peach vinyl wallpaper. While we were in Mexico they told us they'd changed it and we were thinking "good they finally updated it" but then when we finally saw it, it was replaced with this loverly dark blue vinyl wallpaper with a flower basket border at the top. And they were standing there all proud saying "oh thank go we got rid of that awful peach!" When I was painting yesterday the visions of that wallpaper kept floating back in my mind.
Is it possible to put a no wallpaper clause in a renters contract? This is the one thing that will keep me up at night worrying if we leave.
(btw our renter in the other house painted huge black chinese letters all over the kitchen walls--no idea why--yes I know the irony of it, anyway he also has a buddha altar and he installed candle holders in the wall, screwed in sconces right over the cat dish...I thought about that too when I was painting yesterday with my expensive French paint)

I hope things work out for you guys.
We might be on the move too, but only from the sunny south of france to a village within 30 minutes of Paris (any ideas would be welcome). My husband has kind of been offered a great job in one of those big towers at the Defense and it seems like the right time (10 years with same company is getting a bit much for a first job) for a career move and also real estate around Paris is cheaper than here and we do need more bedrooms for the children..
I know what you mean about the price of paint, even for a good quality white paint you have to pay around 60euros for 5 litres..or is that 2.5 litres?
Take Care,
Maria
Things are actually great either way for us. We love the village so we'd be happy to stay here for a long while (not forever god forbid but a bit more than five years) and the travel part sounds exciting too so either way it's okay.
A move to the big city will be an adventure, wow. There are some wonderful villages thirty minutes outside the city and some huge houses. You can email me about it but I really only know our region, the 95 :)
I know about the cost of paint. I am going to have to repaint a few rooms here soon, but I enjoy painting. As long as someone watches the kids for me. I prefer to paint alone.
If I were you I'd go white and fairly generic.
Something might come up. You never know.
And there is nothing wrong with putting a no wallpaper clause in the contract. I have had contracts where I needed the owner's permission to paint/renovate/wallpaper, etc. Perfectly acceptable IMO.
what is up with the wallpaper obsession in France?
We had the funniest wallpaper in our bathroom, it had both flowers AND Chinese letters on it. Never quite figured that one out.
As for the clause, why not?
Yes, that would be great, if you could just let me have a couple of names of nice "family friendly" villages in your department and then I can start looking a little via Se Loger.... We have a couple of friends who live in the 78 and they love it there (Conflans....) but I'd like to live in a village with a good bakers and nice schools nearby. My email is alain.ledoux@gmail.com, I couldn't find a link to your email, sorry:).
I think white is a good idea, too. I'm repainting our house blanc cassé, so it will (hopefully) appeal to a wide range of buyers.
Thanks,
Maria
Chris, I had to say I was shocked to read that you like painting! LOL! I guess it makes sense, with your addiction ... When we bought this apartment we painted the hall and its 9 paneled doors and I completely swore off painting ever again. I just about had a nervous breakdown. We had professionals come in to do the living room, you remember, all that woodwork covering 14 foot high walls?
About finishing the place, I'd paint it neutral tones because the first thing everyone wants to do is make their mark. Anything other than neutral is always considered to be wrong by the people coming in, it does not matter how great it is. You definitely can keep renters from making changes. When we first came to France we rented and it clearly stated that everything had to be put back to its original condition when we moved out, and this was verified by an inspector.
Oh, just GO to China! You will love it and also you can have stuff done at reasonable prices. For example in Beijing I had this idea that I wanted one wall in my apt. to be covered with built in shelves, and the workers came in one morning and did it exactly as I told them. It was lovely.
I'm surprised painting/wallpapering is acceptable at all in a rental! Every rental I've had there's been the stipulation that no major changes could be made without the owners approval.
We had the same feelings when first doing our house - do we fix it up for generic sale, since we planned to leave in 5 years? or do it for us? 4 yrs later, I'm glad we did it for us as it'll be another 5 before we're likely to move.
As for wallpaper - I thought that was out these days? I haven't seen wallpaper in forever and OMG you don't know how much I loathe wallpaper!

I read your blog with great admiration. I’m a small town artist and I have no idea how I would react to having to move from my comfort zone. Your husband faces both a wonderful and terrifying opportunity. At least it’s Asia and not the Arab Emirates. You won’t have to cover up until only the whites of your eyes show. There’s a lot to be said for exposing your family to new cultures. You are right that this also entails the most stressful move of your lives. If they’re offering your husband a good package and it sounds as if they are, this could bring you financial solvency. Money you can save and use to come back to America and buy a house. Artists thrive in new environments; I know that I probably could use a change myself. I’m venturing out to the internet to use the available tools to sell Art online . Art is my life and like you I find it so relaxing to paint. It helps to lower the stress levels when life invades my happy place. I wish you all the best in your pursuits.
